NOTE – This is an Artisan Hobby activity at Australiana Pioneer Village at Wilberforce NSW where I have been fortunate to have a workshop in the village where I can demonstrate old fashioned spin casting of the badge making industry, an industry that is dying in Australia.
My aim is to as close as I possibly can replicate the industry as it was 100 years ago.
The obsolete casting machine I use is 65 odd years old and still functioning.
These are all of my manufacture and I make them the old fashioned way by spin casting then process them by hand one by one to finish them, so there are always small differences between any two items.
The Australian smelted metal I use is obtained from an Australian family owned business called Northern Smelters based in Queensland with a branch in Liverpool NSW.
The Pewter I obtain from Northern Smelters is of the highest jewellery grade and is 92% tin making it a semi precious metal as tin, after platinum gold and silver is the fourth most precious metal, it cannot corrode or rust.

Wayne Wagstaff – Art by Degrees
But with (the art) it just flows and while you have an idea of where you want the metal to go, sometimes it goes somewhere else and you just work with it
Our Blacksmith demonstrates the way things were –
hot glowing metal being manipulated into various shapes and forms.
Feel the heat from the shed and imagine the life being lead in the scorching hot summers of the Australian outback . . . and the warmth when winter blew through.
Wayne has a history of technical, mechanical and practical hands on experience through varied disciplines. Wayne is a qualified Blacksmith, training under a craftsman Blacksmith that worked in this very Smith at The Village. See on display the various tools that Wayne has made by his own hands, along with items for sale. He can also show you how to manipulate hot metal into small trinkets and works of art.
If you would like something made by Wayne in the style of old,
please ask Wayne or his partner Rose and discuss your requirements.
